Reading and writing practice

Original reading passage

Public libraries provide more than books. They can offer quiet study spaces, access to information and opportunities to learn with others. Their value depends partly on how easily people can use them. A library that listens to its community can adapt its services to different needs.

Working with meaning

  1. Write the main idea in your own words.
  2. List two details supporting that idea.
  3. Explain what “adapt” means in this passage.
  4. Write a brief summary without introducing new claims.

Revision

Check whether your summary preserves the author’s meaning. Remove repeated ideas. Review spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and agreement.
